Not About The
Buildings
Non-Fiction
Prize
We're kicking off
our 2009-10 programming schedule with our second annual Writing Prize.
This year, we are going to award the Prize to an exceptional
piece of creative non-fiction writing.
The winning piece
will be published as a chapbooks in an edition of fifty, which
will be sold by Not About The Buildings both locally and online.
The prize will be
judged by Anne
Elizabeth Moore, journalist,
author, friend of Not About
The Buildings, and founding editor of the Best American Comics
series.
The deadline for
submissions is October 15, 2009.
Below is the complete list of rules.
RULES:
1. The
competition is open to all writers of creative non-fiction (though
entries received
must be in English.) While local writers are particularly
encouraged to enter, the writer's place of residence or
relationship to Providence will not affect judging.
2.
Entries must be previously unpublished works of creative non-fiction,
no longer than 5000 words. There are no further thematic
requirements, though it should be stressed that creativity is key.
(In other words, criticism, straight journalism, and
research-based work is not really what we're going for.
Literary journalism, memoir, and narrative writing are.)
3. Entries received by mail must be typed and double-spaced
on 8 1/2 X 11 paper. Only one copy of the submitted work is
necessary, and each author may submit only one piece for
consideration. Entries may also
be
e-mailed--in
.doc or .rtf format--to thebuildings@notaboutthebuildings.com
4. Each
entry should include, on a separate
page, the
author's name, mailing
address,
telephone number, location, e-mail address, and title of the
work.
5.
Entries that do not follow rules 1-4 may be
disqualified.
6. Judging will
be done anonymously, and the
decision of the judge is final.
ENTRY
FEE:
In lieu of an entry
fee, donations of $5-$10 to Not
About The Buildings are suggested. However, entries will not
be
turned down if donations are not
made. (Obviously, judging will not be impacted by the amount
of
the donation, either. We're not hooligans.)
PRIZES:
The winning piece
will be published in a limited-edition
chapbook, which will be
available for sale in mid-November of 2009. The opportunity
for a
chapbook reading/release
reception will also take place at the Providence Athenaeum in
November, according to the availability of the author.
Additionally, the author will receive a one-year membership
to
the Athenaeum and five copies of the chapbook.
